Mental Health News Radio is proud to announce that they will once again cover the NATCON18 Conference for The National Council for Behavioral Health.  This year the prestigious event is to take place at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. Over 5,000 like-minded leaders in the behavioral health field will attend this event to learn how to stay on the cusp of the changes and advances that are being made in mental health advocacy and education. Mental Health News Radio Network will interview speakers and vendors at the event to ensure their listeners are also keeping up with the trends in the field. Mental Health News Radio Network believes education is key to reducing mental health stigma so covering this event feels like part of their mission. This year’s conference will focus on new research in behavioral health, addiction treatment, and whole-person care. Strategically, Hill Day will coincide with the conference. This will give attendees and participants the opportunity to participate in advocacy for behavioral health on Capital Hill.

Trauma-Informed Services and Suicide Prevention Efforts with Cheryl Sharp

Cheryl Sharp joins us at National Council for Behavioral Health’s annual conference #NatCon18 to discuss her presentation and role with the council.

Cheryl S. Sharp, MSW, ALWF is an Exclusive Consultant to the National Council for Behavioral Health Trauma-Informed Services and Suicide Prevention Efforts.  As part of the trauma-informed care (TIC) team, Cheryl works nationally to facilitate TIC Learning Communities and is a content expert on trauma, resilience and TIC implementation.  Her role as Exclusive Consultant for Suicide Prevention is to work nationally with National Council partners engaged in moving the needle on preventing suicide.  Cheryl is a person in long term recovery from mental health and addiction challenges.  She is a nine time suicide attempt survivor who believes that understanding what happened to people changes the conversation from what is wrong with them.  Sharp has worked with adult trauma survivors for over 30 years and is passionate about the fact that people can and do recover and go on to live happy, healthy and productive lives. Prior to becoming an exclusive consultant for the National Council, Cheryl started and led all of the National Council’s trauma-informed initiatives.  She led On Our Own of Maryland’s Statewide Consumer Networks as the WRAP Outreach Coordinator and was the Executive Director of the STAR Process located in Arizona as well as serving on their Board of Directors.  Sharp received her BA in Psychology and a BA in Women’s Studies, followed by her Masters Degree in Social Work from East Carolina University in North Carolina. She has done hospice social work which is also one of her ongoing passions.

Federal Legislation in Behavioral Health with Ron Manderscheid, PhD

Dr. Ron Manderscheid joins Kristin Walker to discuss his presentation at the 18th Annual Behavioral Health Informatics Conference and Exposition in May 2018. 

Ron Manderscheid, Ph.D., serves as the Executive Director of the National Association of County Behavioral Health and Developmental Disability Directors. The Association represents county and local authorities in Washington, D.C., and provides a national program of technical assistance and support.  Concurrently, he is Executive Director of the National Association for Rural Mental Health, Adjunct Professor at the Department of Mental Health, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, and Adjunct Professor, School of Social Work, University of Southern California. Dr. Manderscheid serves on the boards of the Cosmos Club, the Employee Assistance Research Foundation, the Danya Institute,  the Council on Quality and Leadership, the NASMHPD Research Institute, and the Nation Register of Health Service psychologists. He also serves as the Co-Chair of the Coalition for Whole Health. Previously, he served as the Director of Mental Health and Substance Use Programs at the Global Health Sector of SRA International and in several federal leadership roles in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Throughout his career, he has emphasized and promoted peer and family concerns.

From Columbine to Parkland: A Conversation About School Violence

Dr. Santopietro joins host Kristin Walker to discuss the panel presentation he moderated at The National Council for Behavioral Health’s annual conference #NatCon18.

Dr. Santopietro is the new President and Medical Director of Silver Hill Hospital. He graduated from Yale University, Northwestern University Medical School, and completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He serves on multiple national boards including the American Association of Community Psychiatrists, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the American Hospital Association’s Governing Council of the Section for Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Services. He was president of the Connecticut Psychiatric Society in 2012 where he earned an award for his leadership during the Sandy Hook tragedy. Dr. Santopietro was appointed by governors in both North Carolina and Connecticut to serve on mental health commissions and co-chaired a task force on mental health convened by the North Carolina Institute of Medicine.

 

Immigrant Behavioral Health with Pierluigi Mancini, PhD

Pierluigi Mancini, PhD is one of the presenters at the 2018 National Council of Behavioral Health conference speaking about the need for a multicultural focus in behavioral health.

El Doctor Mancini is a platform created to manifest change in access to services for those afflicted with mental health and substance use disorders.

We will advocate to correct and change current policies, laws, rules and regulations that create barriers for those with limited English proficiency and/or different cultural understanding of behavioral health.

Creating the Film – Suicide: The Ripple Effect with Greg Dee Dicharry

Greg Dee Dicharry is at the annual National Council for Behavioral Health Conference to support the film Suicide: The Ripple Effect with co-producer and co-director Kevin Hines.

Greg is a native of Louisiana who in 1993 moved to Hollywood and began living his vision of working in the film industry. Several years later that career path was derailed by mental illness and drug addiction. For the last 9 years he has been leading one of the nation’s leading youth programs focused on empowering young people with mental health, substance abuse and foster care challenges. Since 2010 Greg has been combining these two passions and has produced, directed and edited numerous mental health related PSA’s and videos designed to educate and inspire.

In his previous film career Greg held a variety of positions including production assistant, assistant director, director, and producer on independent, and major studio feature films, music videos, commercials, and short films. Greg has produced, and directed numerous commercials, film, and video projects including the TV pilot  Tribe TV, which received a regional EMMY Award. He produced Heroin the Real Deal, a prevention film featuring surviving members of the band Sublime. Go Cat Go – an EPK for music legend Carl Perkins, and a 35mm music video.

Greg has continued to sharpen his producing skills by producing large scale youth festivals MY Fest, and other community events throughout the country. He has produced 20 MY Fest events nationally with budgets totaling over five hundred thousand dollars. They have attracted over 50,000 attendees and reached thousands more via social media and news coverage from Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC, COX and Comcast TV affiliates, as well as numerous major radio networks.

Villa Director of Community Partnerships Craig Hedley is known all over Richmond for his work with children and youth.  Having served as Hermitage High School track coach for 13 years and at St. Joseph’s Villa for 30 years, Hedley’s caring and good-humored spirit has changed countless lives.  For this reason, Hedley was recently recognized in CBS 6’s weekly “Heroes Among Us.”

Stuart Ablon, Ph.D., is the Director of Think:Kids in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also Associate Professor and the Thomas G. Stemberg Endowed Chair in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ablon is author of the books Changeable: The Surprising Science Behind Helping Anyone Change, Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach, and The School Discipline Fix.

Percy Howard, LCSW is the President and CEO of the California Institute for Behavioral Health Solutions. Over the past five years, Percy has been a key player and leader in California’s drive to implement recovery-oriented and family-directed Evidence-Based Practice. During the course of his 32 year work history, Percy has worked for County Behavioral Health and Child Welfare Systems, Private healthcare providers, Non-Profit CBOs and in Juvenile Justice Settings. This experience has served him well in his current role as a leader in one of California’s premier Training and Implementation and Systems Improvement Organizations. In his free time, Percy is a competition licensed Racing Driver as well as a singer and composer who has recorded and performed with members of Living Color, King Crimson and Guns N Roses.
