Autism from a Pediatrician’s Perspective on SPARC Out

In this episode, Dr Mary joined Angel Wilson’s podcast, Sparc Out, to discuss Dr. Mary’s personal ties to autism and her perspective.

Get insight into the pediatric side of autism as Dr. Mary talks about her personal experiences with autism, how she’s shaping her practice to adjust to the growing autism rates, and what both parents and the medical field can do to advocate for autistic individuals.  We also talked about how race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status affect the autism field, and how providers like her plan to build more equity in diagnosis and treatment.

Angel Wilson’s SPARC Out Podcast is a safe haven in the podcast world to talk about all things autism. By sharing news, stories, and viewpoints from autistic individuals, family members, and professionals alike, she explores the autism experience and looks to increase autism awareness and acceptance across backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs.

Applied Behavioral Analysis: Autism Therapy and Parent Support

Today, we will be exploring the evolving world of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) with Dr. Mary and our returning guest Angel Wilson.

From autism therapy innovations to practical advice for parents, this episode is packed with insights to help you better navigate your autism journey. Listen in as Angel explains how Spark Guidance transitioned from family-focused services to training providers like teachers and daycare staff.  Our previous episode with Angel, discussing ABA was one of the podcast’s most popular episodes. Enjoy!

After 15 years in the autism field, Angel had held nearly every position in it. From Therapist, to Developmental Specialist, Supervisor, Trainer, Assessor, Interventionist…she learned and saw a LOT. What she noticed, though, were the concerns coming from families and providers alike; a lot of them knew OF autism, but didn’t really know ABOUT autism.
SPARC Guidance was created to answer these concerns. Since becoming a full time business, SPARC has trained over 120 providers (daycare staff, teachers, coordinators, and administrators) on what autism is and how to better understand autistic individuals. In 2022, the mission gained a new platform with SPARC Up, a podcast that centers on all things autism.

Marriage, Autism, and Addiction: A Vulnerable Journey Together

In this episode, Jeff and I open up about a very personal journey we’ve experienced as a couple, touching on autism, the complexities of addiction, and the impact on our marriage.

Initially, Jeff’s autism diagnosis was hard to accept, but over time, we embraced it as a key part of our relationship and individual growth. However, the journey didn’t stop there. As we continued to work on our relationship, another layer of challenge arose when addiction entered the picture. I discuss the sense of betrayal I felt and the toll it took on me, as well as the steps we took to seek healing together.

This episode is about transparency, vulnerability, and learning to grow together through the hardest trials.
