127: Gut Function and Eating Disorders

In this episode, I will be speaking with London nutritionist and health coach, Marcelle Rose. The number one complaint of people with binge eating, food addiction and emotional eating is usually a digestive one.  That makes sense because the digestive track depends on receiving enough fiber and other nutrients to work well.  Also many of the binge foods or “food fixes” are foods that can cause inflammation in the gut. The gut has also been called “the gut brain” because it is so closely tied to our actual brains and problems in the gut can increase issues with depression, anxiety and more.   In this episode, you will learn:

  1. What are supplements that can help soothe inflammation in the gut?
  2. How to heal problems with the gut such as constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
  3. What our thoughts have to do with gut issues?
  4. How emotions can influence gut function and vice versa.

Choose Your Battles

Hey, it’s Amy Newmark with your Chicken Soup for the Soul, and today I’m going to share a couple of stories with you from our newest book, Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Advice that Changed My Life. I know I’m talking about this book a lot, but I really love it. It contains such great, actionable advice, and it is wisdom that can apply to all of us. Today’s stories, for example, are ostensibly about parenting advice, but these wise tips for better, lower-stress parenting apply to all the relationships and interactions in our lives. The first one, for example, is called “Pick Your Battles,” and it’s by our own senior editor, Barbara LoMonaco.

Jason Van Tatenhove: Testifying Against The Oath Keepers: The Right Thing To Do

In part 2 of my continued conversation with Jason Van Tatenhove, he describes, in vivid detail, how visiting the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC gave him the strength and courage to testify against the Oath Keepers. He describes his relief for having a law firm who believed in him enough to accept him as part of their pro-bono program since he had no resources to defend himself. He also gives a step-by-step account of what it was like be an average person one day, then surrounded by armed guards and 100s of photographers within 24 hours. He got through it by staying focused on how he could make something better for his daughters in the world they are going to inherit.
