Welcome new podcast, “Brain Hijack” focused on the topic of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention

Mental Health News Radio Network is pleased to announce the addition of a new podcast, “Brain Hijack” focused on the topic of suicide prevention. The show was launched by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) and is hosted by Drs. Brooke Heintz Morrissey and Adam Walsh who are both Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine employees working in support of the CSTS Suicide Prevention Program (SPP).

With a mission to share meaningful messages and help shape discussions about mental health, Brooke and Adam bring valuable insights on the topic of suicide prevention, risk awareness and other innovative methods for understanding and preventing suicide. By sharing their own personal experiences and amplifying the voices of experts, Brooke and Adam utilize podcasting as a powerful medium to reach others and provide support.

Podcast guests, such as Dr. Thomas Joiner, an American psychologist and leading expert on suicide, take listeners through a step-by step process of expanding their awareness of connection and how to better implement, understand, and reach out to everyone including those who may be struggling at this point in their lives. Brain Hijack is more than just a name – It represents the podcast’s focus on mental health.  The hosts recognize that all individuals face challenges such as stress, loss, and loneliness at times. Each episode focuses on a myth about suicide that Brooke, Adam, and their guest break down and debunk, making the information digestible for a general audience. By having a discussion that can be understood by all, they aim to break the stigma surrounding these topics; creating an open dialogue where everyone can begin to feel comfortable discussing their own mental well-being.

The hosts assure listeners that their own day jobs, educational background, and personal experiences play a significant role in the development of this podcast. Brooke, having served as the Army National Guard Behavioral Health Chief, has provided support for suicide prevention programs by conducting briefings and advising leaders on suicide prevention strategies that work. Adam brings over 25 years of experience in the field of suicide prevention to the podcast. He has worked as a mental health therapist, conducted research on the topic of suicide, and developed programs aimed at preventing suicide. Through their experiences, Brooke and Adam have learned that preventing suicide requires a collective effort and extends far beyond the confines of a mental health provider’s office.

As Brain Hijack embarks on this podcasting journey, their primary objective is to help individuals realize they are not alone in their struggles. By fostering a sense of community, the podcast aims to promote well-being, safety, and the importance of open conversations. Their ultimate goal is to bring more light to an often taboo discussion while injecting a sense of fun into the process. Brain Hijack invites listeners to join them on their own journey towards personal growth and improved mental well-being. Through candid conversations, expert insights, and relatable experiences, the podcasters aim to inspire, educate, and empower individuals to navigate life’s challenges.

MHNR Network Welcomes: Intentionally Emotive Hosted by Shaun Karim!

“Having gone through what I have in my life, I have a responsibility to share my experiences with others. Having been as low as I have been, not even that long ago, that person would not recognize the person I have today, and I want to help others achieve the same thing. ”

– Shaun Karim

Shaun Karim shares his own journey dealing with narcissistic abuse and domestic abuse against men with his podcast Intentionally Emotive.

Shaun Karim felt that there was something missing in the array of podcasts that just didn’t just quite fit what he was looking for in his listening experiences and decided to become a podcaster and fix exactly that void that he had found.  As a man who has experienced an abusive upbringing,  he tended to mirror those kinds of relationships as he got older, often ending up in abusive relationships.  Men as survivors of domestic abuse are not talked about enough.

As Shaun progressed through therapy and his own healing, he decided that he wanted to use his experiences to help others, especially men, in similar situations.  As he has been able to overcome so much and continues to follow that as an ongoing journey, he felt part of his place in this world was to share these experiences, help others feel less alone, and perhaps give them a place to begin their own healing journeys. Intentionally Emotive, the name itself, was specifically chosen as Shaun has always had the best outcomes in his life when he truly connected with what he wanted to achieve.  In a world where we are all trying to live more mindfully, where we are learning more about faith and how to attract things in life, “Intentionally Emotive” just felt perfect.

Shaun’s aim is to help create a way for others to understand that their own personal traumas, all of the things that they have been through in life, are not their fault.   Many people with abuse in their lives may incorrectly place blame on themselves.  Shaun feels that the only way to unlock that is to push that ‘reset’ button and fall into the person who you are, and get rid of the character that you used to be.  It’s not an overnight solution, but it’s absolutely achievable, and he tries to help his listeners jumpstart that pathway in their own lives.

Shaun has been homeless when he was at a very difficult time in his life.  No job, hardly any money, living off of two hot dogs for $1.49 split up throughout four days.  It took several years, but his faith was reignited and he would hand his impossible circumstances to Him and He always would always take care of him at the perfect time.  He understands that he is not here by accident, but because he has a purpose to help others who are where he has already been.

About Mental Health News Radio Network

Mental Health News Radio Network hosts over 70 podcasts dedicated to all aspects of mental health. It is the world’s first and largest podcast network dedicated to all things mental health.

About Shaun Karim

Shaun Karim was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.  Throughout his life, he encountered different forms of abuse and carried that trauma for decades.  It became part of his identity in his relationships with other people and himself.  Shaun suffered through depression and anxiety for decades, was in relationships with narcissists, was a victim of domestic violence, and was afraid of what may come in his future.

It was at his lowest moments when he had a choice–to continue with his family’s script and give up or to take a leap of faith and write his own future. In his long and arduous journey, along with professional help, he learned the origins of his trauma and, more importantly, what he could do to overcome all of it. Shaun is a mental health advocate who understands the pitfalls that toxic thinking and toxic people that are imposed on others, and he understands the “mental reset” that needs to take place.

NEW to MHNR Network!! Welcome Just a Widow Talk with Teresa Taylor-Williams!

Just a Widow Talk brings unique and individual stories of spousal and partner loss in a supportive way to help those who are on their own grief journeys.

“As with most folks, we don’t choose our grief journey – it is thrust upon us.”

– Teresa Taylor-Williams

Teresa Taylor-Williams is a widow, an award winning journalist, and a self proclaimed arse-kicker. She has joined Mental Health News Radio Network with her podcast, Just a Widow Talk.  As a widow, she has and is still traveling the path of grief in the way that only those who have lost a spouse or partner can understand.

Teresa expresses how her faith in the Lord has personally shown her how there can be joy that comes from any situation, even one of profound loss.  This podcast was birthed from the depths of pain and loss and has emerged into something beautiful  – something that is meaningful and impactful.  Similar to a lotus emerging out of the muck and mire, this podcast is beautiful as it is a unique space for those grieving to celebrate, acknowledge, and share about those they have lost.

In her former professional lives she has been a newspaper reporter and later a radio show host.  She is currently studying to be a grief therapist, and a podcast seemed a natural fit for her to continue to use her journalistic skills and reach out to a larger audience.  As a widow who advocates for those who have experienced spouse and partner loss, she feels this is a perfect opportunity to combine her skills, her passions, and her ongoing education to help others in their own journeys.

Teresa wants every one of her listeners to keep in mind that there are grievers in our circles.  We often do not realize if we aren’t paying attention, but they are there.  It is often that many don’t publicize their grief, but if we keep an eye out and pay attention, we can often find those others that are like us and are on a grief journey of their own.  Perhaps it can help everyone to be a bit more supportive, and maybe even reach out to them after listening to a show to help support one another.

Teresa is a storyteller and she feels blessed to have her guests share their stories of grief with her on her podcast, and she is just as honored to have an audience of listeners.  Her goal is to reach the world with the stories of these amazing people who are each on their own journeys dealing with spousal and partner loss.  She expressed that she was grateful for Mental Health News Radio Network for allowing her to fulfill her purpose.  And we are incredibly grateful to have her!

NEW to MHNR Network!  That Infernal Noise – Tune In if You’re Feeling Alone!

That Infernal Noise:  A podcast new to MHNR Network that’s providing a safe space to feel a little less alone.

“If I am being honest, I feel like I have a higher calling to do something to help people. I have been told my whole life that people feel comfortable speaking to me and I enjoy that. I like thinking that I can help improve someone’s life just by talking or speaking to them and if I can help even one person it will be worth it.” – Robert (Host)

“We are those f*cked up thoughts in the back of your head”

When asked what his goal is for every episode of That Infernal Noise, Robert responds, “That no one is alone, no matter what they think.  I am not the atypical person you think of when it comes to being an advocate for mental health and have felt isolated because of it.”  He wants everyone to know that, no matter your race/creed/sexual orientation or any applicable qualifier you wish to use, that it is always okay to talk about your issues and seek help in whatever way works best for you.  He understands that managing our mental health is unique to each individual.

Robert uses his ‘weak’ and ‘insecure’ moments from his day to day life as the main talking points for each of his episodes and as a form of therapy.  He appreciates not only helping others, but there is a certain level of catharsis he gets from just being to put his truths out into the universe, rather than shoving it down and allowing it to fester and eventually consume him.

When asked about any personal information he’d like to share, he shared a bit of wisdom that his son reminded him of when he was having a bad mental day, “it is okay to have negative thoughts, it is what you do after them that matters.” He noted it was nice to know that teenagers listened…occasionally.

NEW to MHNR Network!!  The Self-Care Chronicle with Dr. Marsha Brown – Mental Wellness for the Mental Health Professionals

Mental health professionals should be having regular conversations about our own mental health, how we manage changes in it, and ways to improve it.

“We often receive messages that suggest taking care of ourselves first is self-indulgent and selfish. It most certainly is not. I teach people in high-stress occupations to shift their thinking and implement self-care into their daily routine. When people learn to take care of themselves first, they have more to give at work, home, or wherever else they have responsibilities. When that shift in thinking and behavior occurs and people prioritize their own self-care and mental health, it makes a world of difference.” – Dr. Marsha Brown

Taking care of ourselves is NOT selfish, it can create a change in mood, energy, and ability to handle the craziness each day may throw at us. It makes drastic improvements in anyone’s life.

Dr. Marsha Brown was inspired to create this podcast due to wanting to create a safe space for mental health professionals to talk about the challenges of maintaining their own mental wellness while caring for the psychological well-being of others.  As mental health professionals, they are apt to put themselves on the back burner trying to help one more client or complete one more task. In the process of the focus always being on the client’s mental health, she felt it was just as important to normalize the idea of mental health professionals having regular conversations about their own mental health, especially during a time when they are helping others navigate their way through historical events including a pandemic, social injustice, and escalating violence against marginalized communities, to name a few.

When asked about her favorite self-care techniques she provided a few of her favorites:

  • Belting show tunes – After a trying day, I love to belt my favorite songs during the drive home. It always helps me to blow off steam and I end up feeling a lot better.
  • Watching the sunrise – This always reminds me I have a clean slate and the day ahead has the potential to be whatever I want it to be. Each morning, the sun comes up and gets to work, no matter what happened the day before.
  • Taking a power nap – This is like my mid-day reset button and it helps me to make it to bedtime without getting overstimulated.
  • Stand-up comedy – I love laughing. One of my favorite ways to unwind is to watch a stand-up special from one of my favorite comedians.
  • Watching zombie movies – Not sure why, but I love zombie movies. For some reason, it’s one of my favorite ways to decompress. This one may be pure escapism.

NEW to MHNR Network!!  Safe Haven Space: Focusing on the Mental Health & Well-Being of Refugee & Immigrant Students, Families, and Communities

Safe Haven Space, a podcast hosted by Egette Indelele, dedicated to learning through the stories of refugees and immigrants, amplifying their voices so that we may work to create a global community that is a Safe Haven Space.

“It’s really important that we hear directly from the source, that we ask and listen to their stories, their experiences, and how they would like to be supported, and the things they’d like to see.  It’s imperative that we center them and learn from them.” – Egette Indelele

Egette Indelele, CEO & Founder of the non-profit organization, Safe Haven Space brings her personal experiences as a refugee, her professional experiences as a registered behavioral technician together with the stories of other refugees and immigrants to provide a safe place to discuss how to help the mental health and mental wellness within this often ignored community.  Many having had to deal with true hardships and loss before even arriving, combined with the struggles of a new life of transition and immense change when simply surviving is often the first priority, must now learn how to flourish.  Within this population, many have little understanding regarding mental health and mental well-being, and Safe Haven Space aims to help.

Safe Haven Space aims to not only provide a stage for those struggling to share their stories, but also for those listening, a place to feel a little less alone. Egette is also utilizing it as a platform to learn how to better serve the refugee and immigrant community.  As Safe Haven Space began their journey into podcasting their aim was not only to provide help to listeners in their episodes but to also use it as a place to learn, as an organization, how to better present effective interventions for those that they help through their organization.

About Egette Indelele, Founder & CEO of Safe Haven Space

Egette Indelele was born and raised in a refugee camp in Tanzania. She is the oldest of five children and a first-generation honor college student at George Mason University. She is studying Psychology with a concentration in Cognitive and Behavior Neuroscience in hopes of opening her own practice in Burundi and emphasizing the importance of mental health while serving children with the hope of healing their traumatic life events. Egette’s work with Safe Haven was inspired by her experience as a refugee. She founded Safe Haven to help refugee students resettle in a new world while having access to mental health services. With a passion to help children, she became the President of a UNICEF club at George Mason University. The club gave her the opportunity to advocate for children’s rights and educate her university community on the importance of helping the younger generation. She extended her passion and is now serving on the United Nation International Children Emergency Funds USA National Council. She also manages a program where members and volunteers mentor and tutor elementary-aged children at a local community center that serves refugees transitioning to life in America.

About Safe Haven Space

Safe Haven Space is an organization centered around educating and providing programs for immigrant and refugee students and families on the importance of well-being and mental health as well as providing mental health services to assist students in becoming self-confident so they can integrate into American society successfully. They help students, parents, and families learn about mental health with hopes of breaking the stigma and creating a support base. By educating students as well as parents about mental health Safe Haven Space hopes to lessen the stigma around mental health and create a sense of support for students and families. They do this by teaching students what psychological well-being looks like, the different ways it can affect the human body, and the consequences when young people do not get the mental health care they need. They work with students’ families to break the stigma that is commonly held in immigrant and refugee households, encouraging unity within the family by offering them ways to practice and incorporate a variety of psychological fitness exercises.
