Manage the Cause of Toxic Stress, Not Just the Symptoms

Not all stress is bad as Dr. H explains in this mini episode. It’s important to preserve the patterns of good stress in your life (like exercising or rehearsing for a play) and minimize the parts that promote bad (toxic) stress.

Toxic stress might give you a headache, make you feel sick to your stomach or cause memory issues. The solution to these issues isn’t to take an aspirin or other pill to alleviate the symptoms and forget about them. The solution is to address the root cause of the toxic stress, whether it’s a relationship, job or other aspect of your life.

The Mental Health and Addiction Consequences of Covid

Dr. Lloyd Sederer became the mental health commissioner of New York City right after the 9/11 terror attack. In this conversation he shares how the lessons he learned from that experience can be applied to the current pandemic, including the impact social isolation, treatment gaps and treatment inequities have on the public, and the disproportionate affect on people of color.

This broad conversation also touches on how adding structure to your day helps you feel better, the latest treatments for substance use disorders, and why Dr. Sederer believes humans are extremely resilient.

Dr. Lloyd Sederer is an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health and Director of Columbia Psychiatry Media. He served for 12 years as the Chief Medical Officer of the New York State Office of Mental Health, where he continues as Distinguished Psychiatrist Advisor. He has been Executive Deputy Commissioner for Mental Hygiene Services in New York City (the “chief” psychiatrist for NYC), Medical Director and Executive Vice President of McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA (a Harvard teaching hospital), and Director of the Division of Clinical Services for the American Psychiatric Association. He has led the mental health disaster responses to 9/11, Hurricane Sandy and other disasters.

You're Not Just a Square Peg in a Round Hole

If you have ADHD you’ve probably felt like you didn’t “fit in” at some point in your life. And that can be very difficult to deal with. In this episode Dr. H talks with a Distraction listener named Elaine who reached out to us with a message that was so poignant we knew we had to have her on the podcast.

As you’ll hear Elaine describe in this episode, getting diagnosed with ADHD was a turning point in her life. And like many other women, Elaine wasn’t diagnosed until her child was!

In addition to having ADHD, Elaine also struggles with sleep issues like narcolepsy and sleep paralysis; depression, anxiety and hypothyroidism. And as she wrote in her message to us, “… the damage of feeling like crap about myself for my whole life is something that will take continued effort to overcome.”

We really hope this conversation with Dr. H helps Elaine and others realize that they have many gifts to offer this world!

Strategies for Raising Kids with ADHD, Anxiety and More

Raising kids is tough, but raising neurodiverse kids can present extra challenges that parents of neurotypical children never encounter.  Elaine Taylor-Klaus of Impact Parents joins Ned to share some of the techniques she uses to help parents who are raising kids with ADHD, autism, depression and other complex issues.

Their discussion includes how parents can benefit from having a coach, and “Taking Aim,” the strategy Elaine uses to help caregivers narrow their focus and make one change at a time.

Elaine’s latest book, The Essential Guide to Raising Complex Kids, is available on her website HERE or wherever books are sold.
