Lisa Jamieson is an author, caregiver consultant, and pastoral counselor as well as co-founder of Walk Right In Ministries, a non-profit organization building faith and community with special needs families. Her popular books and studies include Finding Glory in the Thorns and a children’s book on prayer. Lisa facilitates a weekly online peer discussion group for caregivers and hosts monthly Real Talk Livestream conversations covering meaningful topics for families impacted by disability. She is passionate about connecting caregivers for practical, emotional, and spiritual encouragement. She and her husband, Larry, live in Minnesota with the youngest of their three grown daughters, Carly, who has Angelman Syndrome.

Extreme States of Mental Health

This week listen in to Kristin Sunanta Walker host an episode with Dr. Dan Edmunds as he speaks about extreme states of mental health and mental health reform.

Dr. Dan L. Edmunds is an existential psychoanalyst and psychotherapist in Northeastern Pennsylvania. His work has focused on drug-free, relational approaches for those undergoing extreme states of mind as well as autism and developmental differences. Dr. Edmunds is the founder of the Center for Humane Psychiatry, an emancipatory movement for human rights in the mental health system. Dr. Edmunds has advocated for psycho-social approaches for those in distress that are affordable and accessible. Dr. Edmunds developed a therapeutic community project and is involved with autism acceptance and the autistic rights movement. Dr. Edmunds is the author of BEING AUTISTIC: AN APPROACH TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPTANCE; THEY SAY MY CHILD HAS ADHD: DEBUNKING THE BIO-PSYCHIATRIC PARADIGM; THE MEETING OF TWO PERSONS; and MYSTICAL METAPHORS. Sydney has spoken at various autism conferences as the voice of someone on the spectrum from personal experience and eager to educate others. She has been published in Autism Parent Magazine, Autism/Asperger’s Digest, and the new magazine Exceptional Needs Today. Sydney has also been published academically as a student for a peer-reviewed journal.

Sydney is a proud Aspie and advocate for Autism acceptance. She is pursuing her Master’s in her passion, Public History with Museum Certification and serves as a graduate research assistant. Sydney is available to speak to colleges, churches, public school educators about autism acceptance and action for best inclusion practices sharing her personal experiences of those who mentored and empowered her and practices by well-intentioned professionals that were harmful and left a negative impact. She co-speaks with Dr. Holmes and serves on panels upon request.

His biggest guest of all was Dr. Temple Grandin, professor in Animal Science at Colorado State University and autism activist. Sam also made it into the Top 10 of the People’s Choice Podcast Awards. He has also had lots of news coverage about his adventure. Sam is a regular on lots of podcasts regarding positivity, mental health, and other subject matters. Lastly, Sam has launched his own merchandise line, selling t-shirts, autism awareness bracelets, masks, and car decals.

Celebrating the Spectrum with Lemons

During Autism Acceptance Month, we are taking a look at celebrating the spectrum for the unique wiring that is part of the autism spectrum. Dr. Frank Gaskill will share his own story of specializing with individuals on the spectrum as well as his own discovery later in life about himself.

Dr. Frank Gaskill is an American psychologist and author who specializes in Asperger Syndrome, effective parenting, and how technology and children can interface safely and successfully. Gaskill is the co-author of a graphic novel about the Autism Spectrum. In addition to having a comic based on Asperger’s, he is also the host of an online video series dedicated to promoting the idea that Asperger’s is a more highly evolved brain.

See me Spell: Hear MY Voice!

Join Dr. Holmes as she interviews the Seback family. David and Nadine will share their journey with their son to find his voice through letterboard. Then Noah was interviewed and his answers were spelled out communicating what he wants listeners to understand about the power of communication and the differences between non-speaking and non-verbal. I have seen him spell and each time I interview Noah I am always excited about what Noah has to say to educate us all to open our minds to hear what we may be missing as professionals and educators and parents.

Noah Seback is a nonspeaking autistic who had gained the ability to communicate effectively through spelling on a letterboard or keyboard with the support of a communication regulation partner. He is a rising self-advocate who is passionate about promoting communication r flights for fellow autistics who don’t speak, speak minimally, or speak unreliably. His lived experience of 16 years as a non-speaker without a voice has provided him with the ultimate training and expertise. Noah was interviewed in Autism Parent Magazine Noah’s Voice: Non-speaking Man Advocates for Big Changes which had over 2000 shares. He recently wrote an article in the new magazine Exceptional Needs Today, Issue 2: “Let Nonspeakers ‘speak’ into their own lives”.

Education and Inclusion from an Educator Parent Perspective
