John Patrick Hart: Journey to a Good Place

John Patrick Hart retired from government work after forty years of service as a photographic scientist. Pat was involved with photography in the U.S. space program, including space and lunar photography and film. In retirement, he has developed his talent as a writer and blogger. Regeneration After Addiction is a blog with a world wide audience. Pat writes about his experiences in healing and regenerating throughout the process of addiction and recovery, both for his son in recovery and for himself.

In addition to having a son in recovery, Pat has also lost a son to the disease of addiction. One of the most important messages we can take away from this podcast episode: we should tell the addicts in our lives that we love them. We should do this every chance we get.

Nar-Anon is an organization for the loved ones of addicts. Pat is an active member. Through his involvement, he has met many new and interesting friends. Their common interests go beyond the topics of addiction. Just as a support system of recovering friends is important for the recovering addict, it is also important for their loved ones to develop a support system. Through Nar-Anon, family members can make new friends and find a new way of life on their journey to a good place.

Sunshine of the Spirit: David Hecht on Recovery and Spirituality

David Hecht is one of the most interesting people I know. He has been in recovery from addiction for over 33 years. During that time, David has spoken at many conventions on the topic of spirituality and recovery. He has also spoken at local meetings, large and small in the South Florida area and other meetings around the country. He has also sponsored many people over the years and helped them to change their lives.

David is also highly intelligent. In fact, he has tested in the top 0.1% of the population. In addition to being active in recovery, he is also active in Mensa. On multiple occasions, he has been a stand-by to be a contestant on Jeopardy and could easily win on most nights of the show. So, for people who think they are too smart to recover from addiction, David is proof that this is not true. While intelligence and creativity can work against a person struggling with addiction, spirituality can be the key to recovering.

I highly recommend exploring David Hecht’s writing. An excellent collection of essays is available at DrLeeds.com.

Adam Bisaga, MD: Overcoming Opioid Addiction

Please, if you only listen to one episode of The Rehab podcast, listen to this one. The opioid epidemic of the 21st century has become one of the most deadly in history. Opioid overdose has become one of the most common causes of death in the United States. Drug overdoses are the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50. In Frederick County, Maryland, there is a billboard with up-to-date numbers of local opioid overdoses and lives lost.

There are medical treatments that work to save lives from opioid addiction. These treatments are scientifically proven. They work. Yet, federally funded addiction treatment programs are still using treatment protocols that are not evidence based. Family members and support groups are, at times, in favor of treatment plans that are dangerous and can lead to deadly relapses.

Dr. Bisaga is an addiction psychiatrist, clinician, researcher and professor of psychiatry at Columbia University. He is the author of “Overcoming Opioid Addiction”, a brilliantly written book written for everyone to help us all understand how to help save lives in this ongoing opioid epidemic.

Narcissistic Parental Abuse and Addiction: Survival of the Family Scapegoat

My guest on this episode of The Rehab is B. Flakelar, journalist and writer. B. is a victim of narcissistic parenting. Through many years of therapy, study and research, she has developed a model of the family controlled by a narcissistic parent that has resonated with a great many of her readers. While reading her work, I was surprised by how accurately she described the stories told by many of my addiction treatment patients. I wondered about the possibility of some people with substance use disorder having difficulties in recovering because of non-physical abuse from their own families. I also considered the possibility of addiction itself being triggered by such a malignant family structure. I was curious to learn more from B. about her understanding of this family condition and the relationship it may have to addiction as a cause and roadblock to recovery. This episode reveals her incredible understanding of narcissistic abuse as it relates to addiction on a personal level and with respect to her research on the subject.

Please visit B. Flakelar’s website and read the article that we are discussing in this episode: http://parenting.exposed/no-contact-when-the-scapegoat-walks-away/

A Fine Wife: A Film About Mental Illness, Addiction, and Suicide

This episode of The Rehab features an interview with film maker Randall White. Randall is both producer and director of this soon-to-be-released documentary that follows his wife, Michelle, and her struggle with mental illness and drug addiction. The film shows the destructive effects of both mental illness and addiction on herself and on her family. Michelle was a nurse, a mother and a wife. She left behind a note explaining that she did not want to continue to be a destructive force in her daughter’s life. Randall is producing this film with the hope that others suffering with mental illness and addiction will seek professional help and medical treatment. He also wants his audience to understand that addiction and other mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder, are medical conditions that must be taken as seriously as any physical illness.

Randall Scott White is an entrepreneur, musician, father, and budding filmmaker. He is currently working on a documentary called “A Fine Wife”, which tells the story of his family’s tragic struggle with mental illness, bipolar disorder, depression, mania, and suicide.

Christopher Emmons: The Art of Film Making?

This episode of The Rehab features an interview with Christopher Emmons, an award-winning film maker who has expertly written, directed and produced films about the topic of addiction, alcoholism and more. He grew up in Milwaukee, where he had a great interest in filmmaking. While earning his Bachelors at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he wrote and directed the dark comedy feature “Shine Baby Shine” about a bumbling shampoo salesman. His ?lms since have enjoyed much success on the festival circuit, including “New Skin,” “Surrender,” “Prone,” “The Survivor,” and the soon to be released “Roebling’s Bridge,” the little known true story of the family behind the Brooklyn Bridge. Also coming soon is Emmons’ next feature, “The Eighth House,” a thriller about a veteran who gets pulled into an astrology based cult.

Christopher is an award-winning, master film maker. He is a writer, editor, producer as well as a musician and composer. I first became aware of his work after seeing a film named Prone. Prone is partly a story about addiction. Prone is not Chris’s only film on the topic. The film, Surrender, is about alcoholism. In this episode, we explore the art of film making, particularly how addiction has been portrayed in films. Chris also gives his perspective of the movie industry and mainstream films. Finally, we learn about a new film, Roebling’s Bridge that is a period piece, soon to be released. This is Chris’s latest work that follows the planning and building of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Dad’s Addiction: Helping Children to Understand a Father’s Drug Problem

This episode of The Rehab features an interview with author and psychotherapist, Carolyn Hannan Bell. We discuss her most recently published book, “Dad’s Addiction” and the topic of addiction and recovery. When a father uses drugs, it creates chaos in the house.
How do children handle this? What can their mother do to help them understand that it is not their fault? Why is it so important that children understand that their dad’s addiction is out of their control?
Carolyn Hannan Bell has addressed this issue in her latest book, “Dad’s Addiction”. This wonderfully illustrated book is perfect for a mother to read to her children to help them understand what is happening in their home when dad cannot stop using drugs. It is critical for their development that children understand that they only have control over their own actions. There is nothing that a child can do to influence their father’s addiction. It is never the child’s fault. Carolyn Hannan Bell’s book helps children to understand this. She is a practicing Psychotherapist in South Jersey. She earned her BA in Psychology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and her MS in Counseling from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. She often works with families and individuals suffering from the emotional effects of alcohol and substance abuse. This is her third children’s book in her “Helping Children Understand” series. The First is “Daddy’s Disease” and the second “Mommy’s Disease” which were written to help kids understand parental alcoholism.
