Teacher Burnout Part Two with Katie Niemczyk
Katie Niemczyk wanted to be a teacher. In fact, she hoped for a long career teaching in communities where she hoped she would make a difference. The first part of her career was great but she quickly began to see that the education system was flawed and needed an overhaul. She continued to ask for help, hoping to make incremental changes where she could but when Covid hit, she made the choice to leave teaching to take care of her own mental health as well as the physical health of her two small children.
Katie wants people to recognize that teachers have real lives outside of the classroom and the compensation does not equal the emotional demands required for teaching. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a paradigm shift in the education system where we wake up and realize that the most important pieces of the system, our teachers, have reached the breaking point.
