Growing up with an ASD Dad with Guest Erica Holmes

This month we have been focusing on parenting with an ASD partner and parenting in a neurodiverse family system. We have had some listeners ask for a podcast on ASD dads. So today, we bring in our youngest daughter, who is not on the spectrum, to discuss some of her thoughts about growing up with a dad on the spectrum and not knowing about that until later in her teen life.

Dr. Stephanie interviews Dan and Erica about their relationship. We are talking about our book that is to be published this year, which tells a four-person perspective on living in a neurodiverse family system.

Keep a look out for their book coming out in 2023! We hope!

Partnering & Parenting as an ND Couple with Kate & Clark

This month we will highlight parenting and partnering. Dr. Holmes heard Kate and Clark Webb present at the NeuroDiverse Love conference on parenting and thought this would be a good topic to bring to our listeners.

Dan and Stephanie talk about parenting and partnering with fellow ND couple Kate and Clark Webb.

Meet married couple, Kate and Clark. Kate is the neurotypical partner, and Clark is the neurodiverse partner. They have been married for 11 years and have two beautifully independent, strong, and opinionated daughters, ages 3 and 7. Clark received his ASD diagnosis in October 2020, and it has been an eye-opening journey of learning each other’s point-of-view and tactics on parenting. Kate works professionally in the performing arts, and Clark is an auto technician, a special interest he chose to pursue after his diagnosis. Clark is also a US Marine Corps Veteran and completed 2 tours in Iraq before the age of 23.

Together, they consider themselves a dynamic parenting couple that is ready to take on any challenge together and share their experiences with others.

Everyone Deserves a Seat at the Table with “Doc” Hunsley of SOAR

Join Dr. Holmes as she interviews and converses with Dr. Hunsley, known as “Doc”, about how everyone deserves a seat at the table and how, in every aspect of society and community (especially the faith community), we should be inclusive and aware of people with differences.

“Doc” has developed an excellent buddy training program for providing support to individuals with needs from childhood to adulthood. Experience is not necessary for this buddy training, but a willingness to learn and grow and to be teachable about supporting individuals in creative and inclusive ways is a must. Dr. Holmes and “Doc’ will discuss the importance of inclusion and how to train volunteers for the best inclusive practices for various settings.

Stephen “Doc” Hunsley, M.D., is the Executive Director and founder of SOAR Special Needs in Overland Park, Kansas. SOAR (Special Opportunities, Abilities, and Relationships) serves over 900 individuals with special needs through regular respite events and a Special Needs Day Camp. Doc founded and leads the Kansas City Special Needs Ministries Network for area church leaders. Doc also organizes the Wonderfully Made Conference held annually every October in Kansas City. Prior to creating SOAR as an independent 501(c)3, Doc created the Special Needs Ministry at Grace Church in Overland Park and Olathe, Kansas, and served as the special needs pastor. Before this, Doc was a children’s pastor. Doc is a retired pediatrician, while his wife, Kay, continues practicing pediatrics. They are proud parents to three beautiful children: Luke, Mark, and Sarah. The Hunsley’s middle child, Mark, is presently running the halls of heaven. During Mark’s five-year earthly stay, he gave his family the opportunity to learn from and love a child with autism.

You can follow SOAR on Facebook or Connect with Doc on Twitter: @DocHunsley.

Friendship Love Autism with ND Couple Michelle & Andrew Preston

About my Guests:

Michelle and Andrew Preston are a neurodiverse couple who gained a large social media following by sharing their struggles. After having many videos about their various miscommunications go viral, they decided it was important to write a book to help other couples like themselves.

Their debut novel ‘Friendship Love Autism’ is all about how Michelle discovered Andrew is autistic, approached him about it, and how the diagnosis process saved their relationship. It is written by both of them as they share their separate perspectives. This is where the magic in their book resides, as it helps to highlight how their brains work differently.

Michelle and Andrew currently reside in Costa Rica, where they plan to write the rest of their book series. Through their books, they aim to break the stigma of autism and educate the world about neurodiversity.
