SHOTS FIRED: When Time Stands Still (Part 1)

SHOTS FIRED
When Time Stands Still (Part 1)
SDPD Officer Mike Martinez
H.A.L.T. and Call for Backup
Coast to Coast with Mike Koch and Jim McLintock
Officer Mike Martinez is a police officer for the San Diego Police Department. In his first 5 years as a police officer he was involved in four officer involved shootings resulting in the death of three of the violent suspects who attempted to take his life as well as the lives of his partners. In this two part series, Officer Martinez walks us through his life and the challenges he went through after each shooting starting with his first OIS eight months out of field training. He describes what he did and did not do for his self-care and how his personal and professional life began to deteriorate rapidly when he used unhealthy coping skills and didn’t ask for help. Officer Martinez went through the fire and made it out on the other side to show others that there is help and that you are not alone.

THRIVIVAL: THRIVE, don't just SURVIVE: With Eric Farwell

THRIVIVAL: THRIVE don’t just SURVIVE
H.A.L.T. and Call for Backup
Coast to Coast with Mike Koch and Jim McLintock
With special guest Eric Farwell
Positive Connections Radio: S-1 E-20 PCR E-89.

Eric Farwell joins HALT and CALL FOR BACKUP with a powerful message on thriving, resilience, self-care, and life balance: something we call “THRIVIVAL!”
A veteran of the US Air Force and with over 23 years of law enforcement experience–Eric enthusiastically discusses the life lessons learned from tactical medicine, firearms training, team leadership, crisis intervention/de-escalation, emotional wellness, and supervising district attorney investigations. Resonating throughout the podcast, you will hear Eric’s heart for “getting to know my team” and how he blended “servant leadership by encouragement and guidance rather than by directives.”
“I hit the finish line on my face. I didn’t even cross the finish line with a flag in my hand…at what cost…how much is enough?” “It’s important to manage your career. If your career is not going the way you thought it would, you need to pivot. You need to know what the next redirect should be. Every cop I know has that little voice and they can always rely on it. It’s telling you that something is not right. Listen to it. If you don’t, you’re going to suffer without needing to. As my dear friend Katie Lynch would say, “Call for cover now.”
Join us for this fast-paced episode of HALT and CALL FOR BACKUP with trainer, course instructor, criminal investigator, active shooter responder, mac-tac instructor, and tactical combat casualty care training coordinator Eric Farwell!

In order to make positive changes in your life it’s wise to start making a change today. This is the 28-Day Challenge.
28-DAY CHALLENGE GOALS: We’ll have a podcast at the beginning of every month for 9 months and talk about the following principles; (1) LOVE, (2) JOY, (3) PEACE, (4) PATIENCE,
(5) KINDNESS, (6) GOODNESS, (7) GENTLENESS, (8) FAITHFULNESS, (9) SELF-CONTROL.
Self awareness-Self LOVE. What are you doing right this minute? Are your hands grasping the steering wheel? Are you clenching your teeth? What are you doing and not being aware of it?

Here are some steps to train your brain to think better and as a result you will begin to find self-love. All we need is ONE DEGREE of change.

  1. Absorb the concept of your inner self: We have an inner voice that is telling us negative things and this creates chaos and thus an internal battle within ourselves. This voice has been with you always and just wants some empathy and grace but we don’t realize this until now. Start with wanting to be a friend to yourself. How would you talk to a friend?
  2. Imagine what it would be like to begin talking to yourself with respect: Instead of fighting back, running away or finding something to make it all go away. Ask this voice to listen and do this with LOVE.
  3. Act the next time your inner self tells you things that are unhealthy, rude and disrespectful. Realize that these thoughts are not true. Use this simple sentence. “Excuse me brain, I’d rather not think about that, thank you.” Your inner-self/brain will pause because this will likely be the first time you’ve talked to yourself with kindness, with love. Tell your brain, “I understand what’s happening and I chose not to believe you and I’d rather not think these thoughts. Instead I’m going to think about something that makes me feel happy.” It takes practice and might be uncomfortable and embarrasing somehow. Don’t stress, no one will hear you, they can’t, it’s you.
