Adult Relationships with Aaron Huey

Aaron Huey, founder of Firemountain Residential Treatment Center and host of Beyond Risk and Back, discusses how important it is to take care of the adult relationships in your life. This is a part of taking care of your kids – an important part. When we neglect our own self-care in order to take care of our children or anyone else, the example we set for our kids is that their own self-care can take a backseat. All of those relationships in our lives as adults such as with our ex-partners, coparents, extended family members, and so on are important and deserve healthy maintenance.

Interview with a Mom: Cutting Free

Aaron Huey, your host and the owner of Fire Mountain Residential Treatment Center, talks with a mother who shares her story of cutting.
What is cutting? Why is this commonplace with so many kids and also adults? How to help?Is there hope?
In the most basic sense, cutting is a maladaptive coping mechanism that teenagers (and some adults) use during times of high stress and anxiety. While this act is hardly ever accompanied by suicidal thoughts, there is no single cause that has been identified. This self-harming pattern does not affect any one cultural or socioeconomic group and therefore, is a reasonable worry for parents no matter who they are. On the other hand, it is worthy of noting that self harm by cutting is more prominent in females than males. More…

Joshua Shea : Author of The Addiction Nobody Will Talk About

Author, The addiction nobody will talk about

How My ography Addiction Hurt People and Destroyed Relationships

Joshua Shea seemingly had it all. A loving wife, two children, and a supportive extended family. In 2010, he launched a lifestyle magazine in his hometown. Within a year, he was one of the founders of Central Maine’s largest film festival and had won a seat on his City Council. Accolades, including receiving the Key to the City and being called one of the “Next 10 People Shaping Maine’s Economy” by a state newspaper followed.

While the public got one picture of Shea, behind closed doors, his longtime mental health and addiction issues were festering. A workaholic by nature, he actively ignored the red flags surrounding his long-existing ography and alcohol problems. Finding it easier to lose himself in a bottle of tequila and adult websites, Shea’s relationships with his family, colleagues, and friends grew distant. His business ventures began to collapse.

Life as he knew it came to a screeching halt when he was arrested on a charge of underage ography possession in 2014. Shea was convicted and served six months in jail in early 2016. Following his arrest, he sought help and treatment through intense one-on-one therapy, group therapy, and at inpatient rehab facilities. He has been sober almost four years.

Bothered at the lack of quality resources and open discussion around the topic of ography addiction, Shea is now sharing with the public his experience with the addiction in the hope he can help people to not head down the same road that he did.

Shea recounts the last several years of his life leading up to his legal trouble and how his poor judgment and bad decision making led to a life he never thought was possible

What about school?

Aaron Huey, founder of Firemountain Residential Treatment Program, and Ed Porritt discuss the current paradigm of education and alternatives for students who require a greater need. Is the system so broken that it can’t be fixed? No matter how much the teachers try, the overwhelm gets in the way of being able to meet the individual students needs, Not to mention a teen at risk and the immediate attention they require.

Ed is endorsed in special education and gifted education and has taught grades 5-12 in an array of school settings. As principal, he has designed several schools and programs that have helped hundreds of struggling students, including students who have experienced trauma or have anxiety, depression and other mental health-related challenges. For Years, Ed’s programs have helped students reassemble fragmented pieces or rediscover buried potential, and learn about their strengths and challenges.

Eventually, they develop resiliency, thrive in a community, meet educational milestones, and move on optimistic about living full, meaningful lives.
