Episode 26- Travis Martin, Chapter One Foundation, and the “Hope Dealer.”

Episode 26- The Chapter One Foundation

Join Founder, Travis Martin, as we discuss his last days in the fire service and how he turned his darkness and despair into a new creation as a “hope dealer. Travis was a career fireman in Florida for many years until the demons of his past and the stressors of the job culminated in a suicide attempt and losing everything. His story of inspriation is a message of hope for all. Below is an excerpt form his biography.

In my own life, I continue to battle the PTS beast. In September of 2017 I had to spend a month at the IAFF center of excellence in Upper Marlboro, MD. The peers I met are now friends for life. I grew a lot from that experience. In fact, I discovered my ability and gift for art. When I returned home, I enrolled in Full Sail University for Computer Animation. Month in and I am crushing it. But daily I live this recovery. It’s bad lows sometimes lasting days not weeks any more. My kids, family, and friends are still very unsure of my recovery but I do my best to do the things I need to do to keep me healthy.  I put all my heart and passion into Chapter 1 and my college classes. I hope to work as a graphic designer/animator in less than three years. I also hope to have a Chapter 1 Foundation in every major city by 2025.

Episode 23- Dennis Cole and The Uniformed Services Peer Council-

Join Dennis and I as we discuss his story and what motivated him to start this peer council designed to help providers with issues that up until recent days have had little support.

Dennis Cole is the President and founder of the Uniformed Services Peer Council (USPC), a nonprofit agency in Connecticut that provides direct assistance to first responders by networking effective help and ensuring proper access to resources.  Almost four years ago, he survived his second and nearly complete brush with suicidality, alcohol abuse, and the effects of trauma.  During the recovery process, he encountered many areas that were severely lacking in our system of help and several gaps that needed to be addressed.  With the help of friends and others who had similar experiences, the organization was formed.  Networking effective and reputable people to assist and guide others through the process of wellness is paramount to improving another’s success and is a mainstay of his work.  USPC has a focus of “peers helping peers” and assisting each other through the journey and pairing them with professional help.   Their network has grown to over 20 providers who have all been screened to meet the highest criteria for professional effectiveness including specialties in trauma work, professional counseling, addiction and substance abuse, mind-body connection, and through to primary care and sleep

Ep019: Katrina King – Recovered Purpose and Chasing the Dragon

In 2011, while Katrina was incarcerated pending sentencing for prescription fraud, possession, distribution and other charges related to her addiction, Katrina’s 20-year-old daughter began heavily abiding prescription pills. Within months, her beautiful and naive little girl was completely addicted and out of control. Katrina felt panicked and powerless as she was told that the child who was always terrified of needles, was now injecting herself with death regularly. Only a few days after she was advised of Kirstyn’s deteriorating condition, her child overdosed while her mother was trapped in jail, paralyzed by inexplicable grief, regret, and crippling hopelessness.

Today, Katrina advocates for all suffering from substance abuse, their families and trauma survivors. The founder for “Recovered Purpose”, she has dedicated her life to serving others. She is driven to honor her daughter and leave a legacy of love to her son and his family. Katrina is proud of her son who serves our country enthusiastically in a branch of the military.
