When Your Mind Feels Like A Prison | Johnny Crowder

Johnny Crowder began exhibiting symptoms of mental illness at the ripe young age of 3, and it didn’t let up for a decade or two. His abuse-ridden adolescence was sprinkled with suicidal thoughts, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and some pretty eye-catching acne. In short, it wasn’t pretty—and neither was he. Crowder pursued a degree in psychology from UCF—that is, until his band, Dark Sermon, got signed and he left campus to tour the universe. Although he finished his degree on the road, he learned more about the human psyche through his travels than he ever could in a classroom. After years of intense therapy and heavy medication, Crowder is now functioning healthily without the use of either. In their place, he’s developed effective strategies that allow him to maintain a sound mind and body throughout his journeys with his new band, Prison, whose music addresses his difficult past and encourages others to persevere.

The Power of Your Mindset feat. Dr. T

“I don’t care if you’re 6 years old, I don’t care if you’re 16, you’re 26, you just started playing sports for one year or you’re a professional athlete, you need to understand why you’re doing something and if you do then you’re able to become stronger and become more powerful and be able to become more resilient.”

In this week’s episode I am joined by board certified psychiatrist, Dr. T. While he works with many different patients, he has a specialty focus of working with high performing athletes, entrepreneurs, and other high performing individuals. If you’ve been looking for an episode on the power of your mindset, this is the one for you!

Lindo Bacon — “Radical Belonging: How to Survive and Thrive in an Unjust World”

What is the most important factor in being healthy? Exercise? Diet? Meditation? No, it’s your zip code. Dr. Lindo Bacon has spent their career studying the intersection of health and social justice issues. Their newest book, “Radical Belonging: How to Survive and Thrive in an Unjust World (While Transforming it for the Better)” is a deeply personal look at how their gender identity caused them to experience discrimination and un-belonging, and how those kinds of experiences have real and observable effects on our neuro-biology. Vaccine Hesitant? That is ok…

Prayers UP for Health & Happiness for Humanity! I am known as an M.D. in my community for minimal prescribing and/or doing so only if needed. I usually wait > 1 year to try any new meds (scientific method and gathering data) if needed for my patients, when considering new medicines.   It is ok […] Continue reading…

I Finally Found Self-Compassion

Cancer and cancer treatment are not for the faint of heart. I ended up in the ER and a hospital stay last weekend. During the darkest moments of that experience, I stopped fighting what was and surrendered to what is. I was overcome with a sense of peace. And, then the tears came. I realized what I was feeling was self-compassion: a feeling I had not felt in the seven years of living with cancer. Self-compassion is the key to self-soothing. Yet, it is often misunderstood and and so many resist its practice. Let me tell what I learned from facing fear.
