154 – Dr. Davia J. Crutchfield – Liberty Starts Here

“It is my goal to own me, to own myself.” ~Dr. Davia J. Crutchfield, Ph.D.

If you measure life along a linear trajectory, then yeah, Dr. Davia J. Crutchfield, Ph.D., and I have known each other for about a minute. But when it comes to anti-racism and healing wounds caused by white supremacy? Oh…we’re firing on a deeper, symbiotic wavelength!

This is a chat between old friends who’ve just met. For a topic that’s so heavy, however, our conversation is buoyant and joyful. It’s also filled with enough snap-worthy points that you’ll want to take notes. Or bookmark this episode. Or have t-shirts printed.

Dr. Davia is a cultural researcher as well as the co-creator and co-founder of BL&CK (pronounced “and Black”), an online community that celebrates the diversity of Blackness. At the top of the show, I asked Davia to describe Bl&ck. She painted a picture of an online space (for now) that ushers in positivity, wholeness, and wellness.

And she brought that same energy to this space. She calls our chat an “us” conversation, a sharing of ideas that flows from mutual respect for each other’s right to live authentically. “It’s important,” Davia says, “for people to realize, like, those are the stakes. This is everything. This is what’s at stake.”

Dr. Davia J. Crutchfield, Ph. D. is the creator and co-founder of BL&CK (pronounced “and Black”). As a cultural researcher she presents (through Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics) how secular rap music serves as a cultural and spiritually empowering tool in the Black community. She incorporates cultural and personal experiences of race, sex, gender, spirituality and love through storytelling, written poetry, and spoken word.

Parasympathetic Routines – Boosting Your Psychological Stamina

The parasympathetic mode is that part of the nervous system that causes us to become calm, relaxed, digest, rest, restore, increase creativity, go deeper spiritually.

The parasympathetic rescues us from what Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk, psychiatrist and  researcher, foremost authority defines trauma as a gut wrenching, unbearable body mind sensation experience that is unrelenting. Trauma feels ongoing and unending.  It is very difficult for those who have not experienced psychological trauma to understand and appreciate its ever-present quality.

Quotes from my book Recovering and Healing After the Narcissist:

“Everyone is entitled to rest, solitude and reverie…Whatever happened to down time? Some of the most creative and productive human beings spend segments of their days in a quiet, calm, unstructured environment. One of the best venues for down time is being with Nature…”

We are human animals. Watching animals we recognize how often they rest. They spent much of their time resting throughout the day. Resting helps us in the sleep process. In resting we practice letting down, allowing ourselves to just be, without demands, criticisms, instructions, judgments.

Spend time with Nature – It is so restorative to you.

GASLIGHTING: Sneaky Emotional Abuse

Understanding the many faces of gaslighting helps you see it coming. Then, seeing it for what it is, you can discount it, reject and deny it. In this episode, I help you see ten faces of gaslighting that can help you recognize it for what it is: emotional abuse. The actual definition of gaslighting I like from www.urbandictionary.com is: “an increasing frequency of systematically withholding factual information from, and/or providing false information to, the victim – having the gradual effect of making them anxious, confused, and less able to trust their own memory and perception”It has so many faces, some that you might not immediately think of as gaslighting…until now. I often think of gaslighting as times when someone wants to define your reality for you, rather than trusting you and your senses. It’s nasty, as well as sneaky. It’s definite intention is to undermine your confidence in yourself in every way. Too often, it’s a successful ploy! ?HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY’S EPISODE:Why gaslighting is a huge issue in eroding self-confidence10 ways gaslighting shows up and how to recognize themExamples of gaslightingWhy it is essential to recognize the different ways a #Hijackal will attempt to gaslight youHopefully, by the time you hear all ten, you’ll say “No More!” A person who thinks they can tell you what you think, feel, need, want, prefer, or remember is a person to watch out for. Beware, though, because they wear you down, you may have a tendency to believe them. Don’t! They are using and abusing you, and you deserve to be treated with respect, care, love, and honesty.
